The Jungle
The Jungle by Upton Sinclair was one of the most influential books printed in the United States. Published in 1906, Sinclair's book exposed the Chicago Meat Packing Industry's horrible conditions to the public. This book, which was widely known to the public, also helped Wiley gain the national support needed to implement the Pure Food Act of 1906. Since the public wholeheartedly gave their support to the cause, Congress passed two, new legislation. The Federal Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food Act of 1906 also established an agency known today as the Food and Drug Administration.

Mary had a Little Lamb Variants" Mary had a little lamb,
when she saw it sicken, she shipped it off to Packingtown, and now its labeled chicken" This rhyme is a variation of the original children's rhyme, "Mary had a Little Lamb" , to emphasize the awful condition in the Chicago Meat Packing Industry(Packingtown). Source: New York Times |
